The Orphans’ Parliament

Artist’s Statement

Natural cycles are the pure embodiment of hope. Nature adapts and thrives. Despite earthquakes, hurricanes, fires and flooding, she persists. Clouds scuttle across the skies; streams tumble from the mountains to the sea; sun warms the soil (and my soul). Tender shoots emerge; blossoms dance; pollen-booted bees sup nectar in the evening light; rose hips blaze against new-fallen snow—and I am compelled to paint.

My paintings are the result of layering transparent glazes, slowly building depth and richness. I like to play with various media and surfaces. If I listen carefully, my subject matter will guide my choices.

My Dragonflies and Waterlilies series represents transcending obstacles to thrive in the midst of personal transitions, social unrest and a worldwide pandemic.

Resembling a steam-punk transformer assembled from spare parts and fairy wings, the dragonfly symbolizes wisdom, change, transformation and adaptability. These delicate creatures bring me lightness and joy.

The waterlily floats lazily on the surface, symbolizing all that is true, good and beautiful. It’s sturdy petals and broad leathery leaves provide a firm, flexible foundation, while speaking to me of good fortune, peace and enlightenment.

The Pollinators series celebrates the humble bee. These fuzzy-buzzy creatures play an important role in over a third of the food we eat. The hive works together as one, symbolizing community, as well as personal power. Just as bees set off to form new hives, they lead me to discover my next chapters. Bees carry on their wings bright sun, good luck and prosperity.

Flowers represent life in all of its fascinating stages. Reproduction, germination, gestation and potential, the magnificent full-blown glory of showy blossoms! Sunflowers in particular represent happiness and optimism, longevity, love, and loyalty.

Art is my way of seeing, expressing and sharing my experience of the natural world. I hope it makes you smile.
